Weatherly Heights Baptist Church

“We have NEVER finished bags this quickly. It’s amazing how God works!!”

That’s a quote from Charlene Pinke, who along with husband Steve organize and lead Weatherly’s backpack ministry. This is a deacon sponsored ministry that packs a full week of food in a grocery sack such that it will fit in a student’s backpack. The students, who attend Martin Luther King Elementary School, take the bag home for food during the week of break since they don’t have access to school meals.

This year, our ministry leaders have gone above and beyond to get all of this done during a pandemic. The church packed 476 bags! Says Charlene:
“It seems like Steve either picked up food or had food delivered to our house every day for the last two weeks. People were there to pack, socially distanced and masked.” Packers ranged in age from small children to senior adults. This is truly a total church mission effort!

AND, it makes a difference. MLK Elementary principal Cheryl Hutcherson Askew writes:

“Good afternoon! I just posted the pictures and cried again! This means so Much to me. I am very grateful that God put my students on the hearts of this ministry. Now I don’t have to wonder if they have food over the break. We don’t really know what goes on after they leave us in the afternoon. I pray so hard for them. We appreciate WHBC so much for seeing the need and answering the call.”

Charlene speaks for many WHBC’ers by saying:
“I am grateful to be a member of such a loving, serving church as WHBC. The emphasis on missions is one of the reasons we chose Weatherly.”
